Raleigh Publisher Honored by Area Architects

April 19, 2010 (RALEIGH, NC) –  Bernie Reeves, editor and publisher of Raleigh Metro Magazine, was presented with the annual Isosceles Award from the American Institute of Architects/Triangle section during an awards ceremony held Friday, April 17 in Durham. The award honors decades of service to the profession of architecture.

Reeves, son of the late Ralph Reeves AIA, principal of the award-winning firm Holloway-Reeves in Raleigh, instituted regular coverage of architecture and preservation in 1978 in his weekly Spectator Magazine, the first general interest publication nationally to feature architecture as regular, scheduled content.

Spectator Design Editor Kim Devins Weiss worked with Reeves to launch the Triangle Architecture Awards Program in the early 1980s. The awards program, that attracted noted jurors from across the nation, eventually evolved into the Isosceles Awards sponsored by AIA Triangle.

The Spectator also founded and published North Carolina Architect magazine for six years in collaboration with AIA North Carolina.

Reeves continues to underscore the importance of the built environment – and architects and designers – in his monthly Raleigh Metro Magazine that features complete design pieces by Diane Lea and the monthly Form+Function column covering architectural news by Mike Welton.

“As architects, we have always had a champion in Bernie Reeves,” said multi-award-winning Raleigh architect Frank Harmon, FAIA.

According to AIA Triangle, “The purpose of the AIA Triangle Isosceles Award is to recognize individuals, institutions, associations, or companies outside the profession of architecture who, in collaboration with AIA Triangle members, have made significant contributions to the improvement of the built environment” including “activities that raise the public’s consciousness of the importance of excellent design in shaping the appearance and quality of the environment we live in.”

Out of the Shadows: Wrongly Accused “Mole” Sheds Light on Infamous Traitors During Raleigh Spy Conference

March 21, 2008 (RALEIGH, NC) — Brian Kelley, former counterintelligence officer for the CIA who was mistakenly a accused of being the mole who turned out to be Robert Hanssen, will open the Fifth Annual Raleigh Spy Conference on Wednesday, March 26, with an in-depth and revealing discussion on infamous traitors: why they crossed the line, how they managed to elude detection for as long as they did, the level of damage their crimes inflicted on this country, and how they were identified and brought to justice. His presentation will begin at 7 p.m. in the N.C. Museum of History in downtown Raleigh.

According to Conference founder Bernie Reeves, Kelly will draw on “first-hand knowledge for an intriguing presentation that traces the infamous careers of two of the most notorious traitors in US history — Aldrich Ames and Robert Hanssen – and a third shadowy figure, former State Department officer Felix Bloch, presently living near Raleigh in Chapel Hill.”

Brian Kelley retired from the CIA in 2007 following a 42-year career, which included 20 years as a United States Air Force officer. During his careers with the USAF and the CIA, he was a specialist in counterintelligence, serving as a case officer for both organizations. In this capacity, he was a case officer in double agent operations as well as in counterespionage investigations.

Among the awards Kelly received during his CIA career were the Distinguished Career Intelligence Medal; Intelligence Achievement Medal; Commendation Medal and the “Collector of the Year,” which was presented to him by the Director of CIA. His most recent publications include, “Counterintelligence Support to Law Enforcement” which was published in the International Crime and Justice Journal in August 2007 and “Twin Traitors: the Stories of Jonathan Pollard and Ana Montes,” which was published in the fall of 2007 by the American Intelligence Journal.

Dan Mulvenna, a former member of the Security Service of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, will join Kelley in the discussion. Mulvenna’s career began with a brief period of service in the Personnel Security and Counter Subversion Branches. He has worked as a case officer, Unit Supervisor and Desk Head in both the field and at Headquarters, focusing on Russian operations for the remainder of his Security Service career. In 1997 and 2003 he organized and led the “Spy Moscow Intelligence Conferences.” This year he will lead a “Cold War Intelligence Conference” in Moscow.

Carolinas ASID Designer Showhouse Selects Metro Magazine for Program Sponsor

February 13, 2008 (RALEIGH, NC) — The Woman’s Club of Raleigh and the Carolinas Chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) have chosen Metro Magazine (www.metronc.com) as the Program Sponsor for the 2008 Designer Showhouse scheduled for May 10 through June 1. The event will showcase two state-of-the art townhouses in Ramblewood at North Hills in Raleigh. Each room in the town houses will be designed and furnished by area members of ASID. Proceeds will benefit Hospice of Wake County as well as other community organizations and programs supported by the Woman’s Club of Raleigh.

As Program Sponsor, Metro will create the official printed guide to the Showhouse, which will include photographs and descriptions of the rooms as well as advertising opportunities for related businesses, individuals and industries.

Metro Magazine is a leading regional publication with circulation of 160,000 from the Triangle to the coastal area of North Carolina. Each edition features articles on architecture, interior design and historic preservation, along with other topics that appeal to its predominately affluent audience.

The Woman’s Club of Raleigh (WCR) is coordinating the Showhouse project. A non-profit corporation, the Club’s 400 volunteers raise approximately $200,000 and contribute 30,000 hours of volunteer service to the community each year. The WCR is partnering with the Carolinas Chapter of the ASID. ASID is the largest professional organization for interior designers in the US with over 34,500 members who have passed its acceptance standards. Each of the participating designers will be responsible for the design and décor of a specific area in one of the townhouses.

The finished townhouses will open first to sponsors and invited members of the community at an evening Designer Showhouse Preview Party on May 9. The Showhouse will open to the public daily from Saturday, May 10 through Sunday, June 1. Hours will be: Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Thursday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Sunday; from noon to 4 p.m. Tickets will be $20 each at the door but can be purchased in advance for $15 per person.

Media Audit Report: Raleigh’s Metro Magazine Dominates High-End Demographics in North Carolina’s Raleigh, Durham, Research Triangle Market

The latest Media Audit for North Carolina’s educated and affluent Raleigh-Durham-Research Triangle region reports that Metro Magazine dominates the high-end demographic spectrum of the market

The report uses a multimedia, qualitative audience survey covering over 450 target items for each rated media’s audience.

According to The Media Audit, 82 percent of Metro’s readers are 25 to 64 years old and have an average home value of $600,000. It also reports that 76 percent of Metro readers have liquid assets of $100,000-plus and 30 percent have liquid assets of $250,000.

“This is almost double the value of the households reached by all other print media in the market,” said Katie Reeves, Metro’s vice president of sales and marketing, “including the News & Observer.”

The News & Observer is the second largest daily newspapers in the state. According to the Media Audit, 50 percent of the daily’s readers have liquid assets of $100,000-plus.

Editor and publisher Bernie Reeves believes Metro’s audit numbers reflect the magazine’s appeal as a content-driven publication that consistently and intelligently covers topics and issues relevant to its target demographic. For example, the magazine’s 2008 editorial calendar includes:
