Green Hill Center Invites Jason Craighead To Join Winter Show

Raleigh artist will feature three works in Greensboro’s premiere art exhibit.

November 28, 2011 (Raleigh, NC) — Green Hill Center for North Carolina Art, located in Greensboro, has invited Raleigh artist Jason Craighead to show and sell his work during the 2011 Winter Show, Greensboro’s premiere art exhibition, from December 4 – January 15.

Jason Craighead is a recognized leader in the North Carolina art scene. His work has been featured in many solo and group exhibitions throughout the Southeastern United States, and it is included in many private and public collections throughout the United States and internationally.

Green Hill Center is one of North Carolina’s preeminent contemporary visual art centers, celebrating the state’s art and culture. This is first time Craighead has participate in the invitation-only Winter Show of 100 artists from across the state, although he has been a part of other events at the Center.

Craighead will have three pieces in the Winter Show: a 50w by 60h work on canvas entitled “Struggle for Comfort” and two 22w by 30h works on paper entitled “This Distance” and “That Last Fandango.”

The Winter Show opens Saturday, December 3, with the Collector’s Choice gala fundraiser from 7 to 11 p.m. Gala-goers have an advance opportunity to purchase pieces in the exhibition before they are available to the public. The Show opens to the public on Sunday, December 4, from 2 to 5pm.

Detachment: Jason Craighead Art Exhibition To Open At Flanders Gallery

August 9, 2011 (Raleigh, NC) – Artist Jason Craighead’s newest works will be featured in a special exhibition entitled “Detachment” at Flanders Gallery in downtown Raleigh from September 2 through October 1.

The show will include works on paper in a full range of sizes up to 22w x 30h, several large-scale works on canvas, and an installation collage of small drawings and random text.

“Detachment” marks Craighead’s first major exhibition in over a year. It also represents a dramatic evolution in his work, which has been widely recognized for the layers of paint that seem to veil the brushstrokes behind them. rebuilding…” The Independent Weekly’s Amy White has referred to his “insistent gestural layering of painted and pencil-drawn lines, which are in turn layered and brushed over with pale washes that read as fog or atmosphere…”

According to Craighead, events and self discovery over the past two or three years have caused him to begin lifting that veil, pulling the curtain back, and washing away the fog. This is immediately evident in such works for the show as “Compare Me To No One,” a 76w x 80h mixed media on canvas painting.

“I’m no longer holding anything back,” he said. “The new work is raw, powerful, and emotional. The layers are stripped off. My tears are right there to be seen. I’m making real, honest work because I’m inspired to do so, and for no other reason. It is both scary and thrilling.”

He realizes, he said, that the inspiration for this new work was a direct result of his systematic detachment – hence the title of the show — from gallery representation that he did not feel was supportive of his evolution as an artist.

“Part of getting myself in the right place mentally was getting myself in the right places physically, like Flanders Gallery. It has been so refreshing and inspiring to work with someone like [Flanders director] Kelly McChesney, who honestly values an artist’s creativity, truly believes in the work she represents, and completely supports her artists’ careers.”

The exhibition will include the work of artist Holly Fischer, whose white clay figurative and abstract sculptures will be juxtaposed against the backdrop Craighead’s paintings and installation.

Annual Atlanta event showcases some of the finest artists from around the world.

February 24, 2011 (RALEIGH, NC) — Raleigh artist Jason Craighead recently donated a painting to the 12th Annual Art Papers Auction in Atlanta to help raise funds for the non-profit organization. His painting “Newer Poetry,” a 40 by 40 mixed media on canvas piece, sold for $2000 during a silent auction held Saturday, February 5, from 7-10 p.m. in the Mason Murer Fine Art gallery in Atlanta. Bidding began at $800.

The Art Papers Auction is an annual invitational showcase of works by known and emerging artists from around the world. Art Papers’ staff selects and reviews all the works on offer. The Collector’s Preview took place Friday, February 4, with the silent auction and gala following on February 5.

“I thought that Jason’s work would be great for the Art Papers auction because he is quickly gaining recognition in Atlanta as well as other areas outside of Raleigh,” said Kelly McChesney, director of Flanders Gallery. Flanders represents Jason in the Raleigh area. “By exhibiting in the Art Papers auction — as one of the biggest events in the Atlanta art scene — Jason has a great opportunity to expose more collectors, curators, and gallery owners to his work. Jason already has many collectors in the Atlanta area, as well as a few galleries hoping to exhibit his work. So the Art Papers committee was eager to have his work in the auction. It was a natural fit.”

Participating artists were allowed to receive up to 35 percent of the proceeds from the sales of their works. Jason Craighead chose to donate all of his proceeds to benefit Art Papers’ mission of providing “an independent and accessible forum for the exchange of perspectives on the role of contemporary art as a socially relevant and engaged discourse.”

Jason Craighead frequently donates work for worthy and charitable causes, including Works of Heart, Raleigh’s premier art auction that raises funds for the Triangle AIDS Alliance.

Other Flanders artists who participated in the auction were: Nancy Baker, Ashlynn Browning, Holly Fischer, Andre Leon Gray, David McConnell, Shaun Richards and Mia Yoon.

Art Papers is a non-profit organization dedicated to the examination, development, and definition of art and culture in the world today. Raleigh Artist Opens One-Man Show at Gallery A

November 15, 2010 (RALEIGH, NC) – Gallery A in Raleigh’s Five Points neighborhood is hosting “Drop The Masks,” an exhibition of new works by Jason Craighead, now through December 31.

 

Gallery A is owned by Steven and Kimberly Andreaus of the Five Points Center for Aesthetic Dentistry. It is located within a historic building on Glenwood Avenue, just across from the Rialto Theatre.

 

Gallery A curator Angie Trull explained her reasons for wanting to showcase Craighead’s work:

 

“I was first exposed to Jason’s work after returning home to Raleigh after living several years outside of Charlotte,” she said. “ A number of his paintings were displayed at Frazier’s Restaurant on Hillsborough Street where I was dining with friends. I felt this immediate attraction to the work and inquired about the artist. Over the next several months, I would find myself standing in another location before a painting that I was attracted to, only to discover that it, too, was a Jason Craighead piece.”

 

Among the locations where she saw his work were the Humble Pie restaurant and The Dawson on Morgan condominium building, both in downtown Raleigh.

 

“The abstract qualities with the gestural drawings, the layering of paints, and the pale washes drew me into his paintings and gave me a sense of calm and peace,” Trull said. “I love that his paintings are ever-changing for the viewer, allowing them to continually experience something new.  Finally meeting Jason and having the opportunity to showcase his work at Gallery A was something of a full-circle moment for me.”

 

The Gallery A building at 1637 Glenwood Avenue also houses Andreaus’ dental practice. “Dr. Andreaus believes that his dental patients benefit from, and appreciate, the ever-changing interior of original paintings and sculptures,” Trull said.

August 30, 2010 (RALEIGH, NC) — Raleigh artist Jason Craighead has been invited to participate in a major group exhibition at the Green Hill Center for NC Art in Greensboro, NC, entitled “Drawing Revisited.” The show will run from September 10 through October 31.

“Drawing Revisited” will showcase over 50 North Carolina artists who work “in a medium, which, in the digital age, may appear to be a slow and intimate art form,” according to the Center’s website. “Over 200 works on paper in graphite, watercolor, artist’s crayon, wash, charcoal and ink will attest to the ongoing vitality of drawing.”

Craighead will contribute four 22 by 30 mixed-media-on-paper works that he created “one Saturday morning on my porch while a friend was playing his guitar.” These particular pieces first appeared in a 2008 exhibit at the Fayetteville Museum of Art.

“These particular works represent a very specific moment in my past as an artist and human,” he said, “a moment of clarity and honesty — becoming confident in ‘feeling’.”

The opening reception for “Drawing Revisited” will be held Friday, September 10th, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Jason Craighead will present a lecture on the subject in the Center on October 13.

Raleigh Artist To Open First Major Museum Exhibit

October 27, 2008 (RALEIGH, NC) – Jason Craighead, the Raleigh-based artist whose work has been described by Metro Magazine art critic Louis St. Lewis as “conjuring up ghosts of everyone from Motherwell to Franz Kline to Cy Twombly,” will exhibit over a dozen new paintings during a special exhibit at the Fayetteville Museum of Art (FMA) in Fayetteville, NC, entitled “The Energy of a Line.”

The show will open November 7 and run through January 11, 2009. An opening reception will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Friday the 7th.

This marks the first museum exhibit for the artist, whose work has been shown in many galleries and other shows over his career, including FMA’s satellite “Gallery 208” a year ago.

“I can’t think of another museum I’d rather show in first more than FMA,” Craighead said recently as he credited director Tom Grubb and curator Michelle Horn with “giving me another opportunity as I move forward. This really feels like good, forward motion.”

Craighead’s FMA collection will include six works on paper (22 in. x30 in.), at least three 64 in. x 76 in. works on canvas, and an 8 ft. x 12 ft. painting, among others.

Painter Gerry Lynch and sculptor Seth Hicks will also be included in “The Energy of a Line.” And Jason Craighead couldn’t be more pleased.

“Gerry Lynch has always been a kind of artistic hero of mine,” he said. “I first discovered her work about 10 years ago, and I was completely blown away.”

“I’ve always liked Seth’s work, too,” he noted – so much so that when he co-owned the former Glance Gallery in downtown Raleigh, he frequently paired his paintings with Hick’s sculpture.

Jason Craighead describes his artistic process as “a passionate and emotionally charged, evolving exploration of line and space, from scribble to scrawl. As an artist, or even a thinker, one must never give in to the ‘simple’ or the ‘known’.“

As an artist whose work continues to evolve, he describes his newest direction as “the ultimate transitional moment for me. And I feel these pieces are representative of that transition. I’m beginning to have a more philosophical approach to my work. I’m no longer afraid to do what I’m doing – to let out whatever needs to be let out. I’m detaching from ‘things,’ finding space and creating rhythm, and letting my work become the pure thing that it is. With less fear comes more freedom.”

The FMA exhibit comes at a mid point between Craighead’s spring 2008 exhibit at the Miriam Preston Block Art Gallery in the Municipal Building in downtown Raleigh and a solo exhibit at Somerhill Gallery in Durham, scheduled for September 2009. The City of Raleigh purchased the largest piece in the Raleigh show.

Earlier this month, a 40 in. by 40 in. painting Craighead donated to the “Works of Heart” auction to benefit the Carolina AIDs Alliance drew the largest bid in the annual event’s 18-year history. Works of Heart is the area’s premiere charitable art auction.

Jason Craighead To Participate in “The Study Group” Exhibition at The Collectors Gallery

progress-jan-08.jpgMarch 2, 2008 (RALEIGH, NC) – Raleigh artist Jason Craighead will participate in a special exhibition at the Collector’s Gallery entitled “The Study Group.” The opening reception will be held Thursday, March 6 from 6-9 p.m. The show runs through April 12.

As a result of a long and mentoring relationship with the late and noted North Carolina artist George Bireline, Raleigh artists Robert Irwin and Bob Rankin formed a study group along with Anthony Ulinski, Richard Garrison, David Connell and Craighead. The group meets regularly to share ideas, offer critiques and support one another. The Collectors Gallery exhibit will showcase work by each artist in the group.

Represented in the Triangle by Somerhill Gallery in Chapel Hill, Craighead will hang two paintings: “Bridge Study #2” (25w x 30h) and “Progress Jan-08” (60w x 60h). Both pieces are part of a larger body of work depicting “idea on construction, deconstruction, revitalization and the energies produced in an urban environment,” he said. Other paintings in his newest series of work are currently on display at the Miriam Preston Block Art Gallery in the Raleigh Municipal Building.

Downtown Raleigh Art Gallery Presents New Works by Jason Craighead

January 15, 2008 (RALEIGH, NC) – For the first time since October 2006, abstract expressionist Jason Craighead will present his latest work in a Raleigh venue when he joins artist Tricia McKellar for a special exhibit entitled “Microcosm/Macrocosm” to be held at the Miriam Preston Block Art Gallery in the Avery Upchurch Municipal Building in downtown Raleigh (222 West Hargett Street). The exhibit will open with an artists’ reception on First Friday, February 1, 5-7 p.m., and remain up through March 13.

Craighead, who recently served as a member of the City of Raleigh Arts Commission’s (RAC) 30th Anniversary Committee, will hang nine new paintings for the show ranging in size from approximately 16×18 to 80×80.

“My current work includes ideas on construction, deconstruction, revitalization, and the energies produced in an urban environment,” the artist said recently. “They’re not depictions of reality, but responses to the visual treat that is everyday city life within the structure and chaos that surrounds us. There is beauty to be found in the grit if we choose to be observant.”

The artist’s lasts Raleigh show was held at the former Glance Gallery on West Martin Street.
