March 2, 2010 (RALEIGH, NC) – RHA Howell, Inc., a statewide not-for-profit organization that has been helping people with disabilities and special needs and their families for more than 35 years, has named Blueplate PR in downtown Raleigh its public relations agency of record.

In addition to residential services, RHA Howell is developing many new, flexible, and innovative programs. The RHA Howell Bridges program provides the management of cap-c services to medically fragile children, a program designed to keep children in the home with their families instead of in nursing homes. The RHA Howell supported employment program, SE-Net, is dedicated to finding long-term employment for people with disabilities through local and regional partnerships with the business community.  The Veteran Support Network, VSN, offers many services to Vets returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, who face physical disabilities and psychological challenges.

RHA Howell is also dedicated to recruit and retain quality employees and most recently developed the Workforce Investment Network (WIN).  This program offers employees the opportunity to choose their own career path, from clinical to administrative and pays their way through college or educational instruction.

Yet few people outside of the health care providers’ industry recognize the name RHA Howell.

“I intend to change that,” said Kim Weiss, principal of Blueplate PR. “RHA Howell serves nearly 1000 people with disabilities across the state yet never stops looking for ways to serve even more people in need. The new Veteran Support Network is just one recent example. RHA Howell employs nearly 1300, all of whom have the opportunity to make a career for themselves in the health care industry through the WIN program.

“This work and these accomplishments should be well-known – and appreciated – across the state,” she added, “but very few people outside of the health care provider industry have ever heard of the organization. Changing that is especially important now that fundraising is an issue. RHA Howell operated solely on public funding for 30 years. But Medicaid reimbursements can no longer keep pace with the cost of continued quality care and capital improvements. I’m not going to rest until RHA Howell is a house-hold name!”

Weiss is working closely with RHA Howell’s Director of Philanthropy, Mark Spano, and Marketing and Special Events Planner, Debbie Valentine. Her focus is on media relations and advocacy, fundraising event support, and on launching and maintaining the organization’s news and events blog.
