Destination Charlotte: Two New Art Museums, One Modernist House, and IKEA
October 16, 2010 (DURHAM, NC) – Just in time for holiday shopping, Triangle Modernist Houses.com (TMH) announces its second “ModShop Art+Design+Shopping” road trip to Charlotte, with stops at two new modern art museums, one new uber-modern house, and an afternoon of shopping at IKEA.
On Saturday, December 4, the group departs at 7:15 a.m. aboard a luxury, Internet-equipped
bus from FastPark near RDU. By 10 a.m. the group will arrive at the new Bechtler Museum of Modern Art and the adjacent Mint Museum in Uptown Charlotte. The Bechtler was designed by famed Swiss architect Mario Botta. The noted architectural firm Machado and Silvetti Associates of Boston designed the Mint Museum Uptown as the final attraction to open in the Levine Center for the Arts, located in the heart of Charlotte’s business district.
At noon, after a catered lunch, the group makes its way to the Smith Residence, an 8000-square-foot house designed by New York architect Lindsay Smith, AIA, for her parents. Originally from Charlotte, Smith established Lindsay Smith Architects in 2005. The “Collector’s House,” as it’s also known, was built in 2009.
ModShop concludes with two and a half hours of shopping time at IKEA, the 365,000-
square-foot store of affordable modernist home furnishings and accessories. To accommodate purchases, each person gets six cubic feet of storage space under the bus. Shoppers can trade, buy or sell their space to each other. Ikea also offers delivery services.
The bus will return to FastPark by 6:30 p.m.
Smart points out the “green” feature of the ModShop trip: “Think of all the carbon emissions we’ll prevent going as a group rather than driving individually.”
The trip is open to the public. Advance tickets are $69 per person, which includes transportation, lunch and museum tickets (10% discount for Mod Squad members.) Tickets sell quickly, so anyone interested should register at www.trianglemodernisthouses.com/modshop.htm.
