Raleigh Salon Owner Takes On New Role

Lather Hair Salon’s Jessica Williams named Wella Training Specialist Jessica Williams

June 23, 2010 (RALEIGH) – Jessica Williams, the owner of Lather Hair Salon in Raleigh, has been named a Wella Training Specialist for the Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill “Triangle” region of North Carolina.

As a training specialist, Williams will teach seminars as a brand expert for P&G professional salon product Wella Hair Color Collections. She will also have the opportunity to assist P&G’s stylist teams at national hair and beauty events, and increase her skills as both a hair styling artist and educator.

To stay “on the cutting edge of hair and fashion,” Williams says she is always looking for new educational opportunities in her industry. That is what inspired her to apply to become a Wella Training Specialist. As a training specialist, she will receive free continuing education, both as a stylist and a salon owner.

“This is a great opportunity for me personally and for my salon,” Williams said. “Continuing education is the key to a successful salon and successful stylists. As I grow, so will my staff, and our clients will benefit from our increasing knowledge of Wella professional products. I also look forward to presenting seminars to other professionals outside of my own salon.”

Williams received her initial cosmetology education at Mitchell’s Hair Styling Academy. Afterwards she worked in a local chain salon then attended North Carolina State University where she received a degree in communications. Returning to her passion for hair styling, she worked in other established salons until she opened Lather Hair Salon in October of 2008.

6+6=HOPE: Lather Hair Salon Honors Pretty In Pink Foundation’s 6th Year with Special Fundraiser

June 3, 2010 (RALEIGH) – Pretty In Pink Foundation, the only not-for-profit organization in North Carolina that provides financial resources for uninsured and underinsured breast cancer patients with limited financial means, marks its sixth year of lifesaving service this summer, and Lather Hair Salon in Raleigh intends to help celebrate that benchmark with an in-salon fundraiser entitled “6 + 6 = HOPE.”

On Saturday, June 19, from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., every Lather customer who donates $6 to Pretty In Pink Foundation will receive $6 off his or her salon services, plus an extra 15 percent discount for those spending at least $50 on salon services.

“Pretty In Pink Foundation offers hope for women across the state who would not be able to receive the  life-saving treatment they need to survive a breast cancer diagnosis otherwise,” said Lather’s owner and senior stylist, Jessica Williams. “I can’t imagine what it would be like to find out you have breast cancer and have no means of paying for your treatment because you don’t have insurance or have inadequate insurance. That’s why we want to help. And that’s why we named our fundraiser ‘6 + 6 = HOPE.’ Six dollars plus six years equals hope and health!”

Dr. Lisa Tolnitch, a breast cancer surgeon in Raleigh, founded Pretty In Pink Foundation in May of 2004 as a vehicle for breast cancer patients who desperately needed care, treatment and surgery, but had no means of paying for service. The Foundation’s ultimate goal is to have a point of presence in every state in the nation.

“Besides raising money for the Foundation, we want to help raise awareness of the remarkable work that the folks at Pretty In Pink Foundation do every day,” Williams said. She noted that informational materials will be available in the salon that day along with Pretty In Pink Foundation “goody bags” for customers who make the $6 donation.

Lather, an upscale, full-service salon, makes it a regular practice to give back to the community. In September of 2009, Lather’s stylists participated in “PinkFest 2009” to kick off National Breast Cancer Awareness month. More recently, the salon sponsored its first “Help Me, Lather. I Need A Make-over” essay contest, which resulted in a complete make-over – hair and make-up – for a breast cancer survivor in Cary.

Lather Hair Salon is located off Glenwood Avenue/Highway 70 West near Carmax. Anyone interested in participating in “6 + 6 = Hope” should contact the salon to make an appointment by either calling 919-792-0715, emailing schuyler@latherhairsalonnc.com, or going online at www.latherhairsalonnc.com (click on “appointments”).

“Our Saturdays fill up quickly,” Williams stressed, “so appointments for June 19 should be made as soon as possible.”

Raleigh Hair Salon Expands Staff

April 28, 2010 (RALEIGH) – Lather Hair Salon in Raleigh has recently expanded its staff to include a new stylist and a new cosmetology apprentice.

Cameron Barbour, 30, has joined the Lather staff as a professional stylist. Originally from Benson, NC, she has five years of experience in all aspects of hair styling including up-dos and extensions. She previously worked at Salon 21 in downtown Raleigh.

“Cameron is a great addition to the salon,” said Jessica Williams, Lather’s owner and senior stylist. “She fills our last chair and we couldn’t be happier with her. She’s a very vibrant, very talented member of our professional team.”

Williams has also hired Stephanie Dungan, 24, as the salon’s new apprentice. Dungan studied cosmetology at Cape Fear Community College in Wilmington, graduating with an apprentice license. She moved to Raleigh when her husband entered the School of Engineering at NC State University. She will complete the requirements to receive a full cosmetology license at Lather.

“I am hoping to hire Stephanie on a stylist as soon as she finishes up her work as an apprentice,” Williams said. “She has fit right into the salon and is a great asset for us.  As an apprentice, she can do everything a licensed stylist does except the physical act of cutting hair and applying colors. So she’ll spend a lot of time shampooing, blow-drying, and assisting in curling hair.”

With these new hires, the Lather team includes five professional stylists, one apprentice, and a salon manager.

Lather Hair Salon Brings Styling Artistry To “Art To Wear” Fashion Show

April 22, 2010 (RALEIGH, NC) — Jessica Williams, owner and senior stylist at Lather Hair Salon in Raleigh, recently led a talented team of stylists from Lather to create hair styles that complemented designer Hannah Goff’s couture collection for the 2010 Art to Wear fashion show at North Carolina State University.

Since 2001, NC State students in the College of Design and College of Textiles have showcased their fashion designs during Art to Wear, which was held this year at Reynold’s Coliseum on Thursday, April 23. And each year, the aspiring designers rely on volunteers from professional salons in the area to create their models’ hair styles.

Williams volunteered she and her staff this year, and they were assigned to work with designer Hannah Goff, a senior in Textile and Apparel Management at the College of Textiles.

The stylists creating individual hairstyles for some of Goff’s model and collaborating on styles for others. And for all the hair designs, Williams asked the Goff what she felt would complement her fashions, which featured an abundance of texture and ruffles.

“Hannah was really easy to work with,” Williams said. “She knew exactly what she wanted but she also took our input when we suggested something slightly different. She asked us to create a teased Mohawk down the middle with the sides pulled back and the back twisted into a bun.”

The young designer also asked the stylists to incorporate a piece of a light green yarn into each models’ hair.

“That was probably the most fun part,” Williams said. “It was great to be able to be creative and do something totally outside the box.  Incorporating the yarn in the models’ hair gave the overall styles more of an edge while it also blended the hairstyle with the clothing.”

Lather stylists’ maintained the same general style but tweaked each model’s hair to appear slightly different.

“For example,” Williams explained, “for one model we created the Mohawk then pulled the sides back and used the yarn to create the illusion of highlights in her bangs.  For another, we wove the yarn into the side braids so that the yarn appeared to be coming out of the braid.”

All the hairstyles were “very edgy, modern and couture,” Williams said.  “It was fun to collaborate with Hannah, with my stylists, and with the models. We would do it again in a heartbeat.”

Williams and her team of stylists participated in the College of Textile’s “Threads: Senior Collection” showcase fashion show for the Senior Design Studio last spring. Lather has also been featured in Salon Today and American Salon magazines and in December 2009 topped American Salon’s list of trendiest hair salons in Raleigh.

Lather Hair Salon Announces Spring Special

Lather stylist Lauren Lawson

March 29, 2010 (RALEIGH, NC) – Winter weather does more than drive up your heating bill. It also wrecks havoc with your hair. To help clients get their hair back in great shape now that the worst of winter weather is over in Raleigh, Lather Hair Salon has put together a Spring Hair Survival Package offering six special salon services for $99.99.

One service in the package is a Dead Cell Trim ($38-$50 value). “It’s important to get the split ends removed that are caused by dry heat and cold weather,” said stylist Lauren Lawson. The package complements this treatment with a Reviving Deep Condition ($15-$20 value) “because you want to mend any damage that’s occurred over the winter so your hair is healthy for spring,” she added.

To create hair that’s “bright and shiny in the spring sun,” Lather is including a Bright Shine Gloss ($25 value) in the package. To make faces brighter for spring, the package also includes Four Face-Brightening Foils ($12-$20 value).

“Just a little bit of color can make your face shine,” Lawson said. “It’s important to lighten up the pieces around your face to brighten up your look for the new season.”

Lather’s special also includes a Spring Style Blowout ($25-$35 value) and a Spring Cleaning Wax for eyebrows ($15 value).

“During warmer months, we tend to wear our hair pulled back more often,” Lawson noted. “So now is the time to get those messy eyebrows cleaned up.”

Those interested in receiving all the services in the special should be sure to ask for the Spring Hair Survival Package when they make an appointment.

Lather Hair Salon Prepares For St. Baldrick’s Buzz Cuts

March 11, 2010 (RALEIGH, NC) – Lather Hair Salon is gearing up the clippers to create a lot of bald heads this weekend as willing participants show their solidarity with children undergoing chemotherapy. Stylists from Lather will be on hand at Lynnwood Grill on Sunday, March 14, from 1-5 p.m. to donate their time and “buzz” techniques for “Shaving the Way to Conquer Kids’ Cancer,” the annual fundraiser for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation.

Last year, over 100 people – men and women – participated in the  Lynnwood Grill event, where the Lather stylists set up on the restaurant’s porch to help raise over $26,000.

“We’re hoping for even more this year,” said Lather’s owner and senior stylist, Jessica Williams, who pointed out that the goal is to raise $40,000 this year.

St. Baldrick’s events are held each March in various Raleigh locations and across the nation to raise money for children’s cancer research. The St. Baldrick’s Foundation uses the money to fund more childhood cancer research grants than any organization other than the United States Government.

“It’s a wonderful cause and a wonderful opportunity for our salon to give back to our community,” said Williams, who also noted that her upscale salon seldom gets the chance to perform full head shaves. “It’s fun to play barber for a day!”

Lynnwood Grill is located off Glenwood Avenue/Highway 70 West next to the Raleigh Grand Theater. For more information on The St. Baldrick’s Foundation, visit www.stbalddricks.org.

Raleigh Hair Salon Announces Essay Contest for Free Makeover

January 11, 2010 (RALEIGH, NC) — Lather Hair Salon in Raleigh has announced its “Help Me, Lather! I Need A Make-Over!” Essay Contest.

The upscale, full-service salon located off Glenwood North/Highway 70 near Carmax is looking for 250-word essays, accompanied by a photo, on why the writer believes she badly needs or deserves a free, full, make-up and hair makeover provided by Lather’s team of professional stylists and makeup artists.

The winner will receive as many services as she wants: cut, color, styling, strategic waxing, shine glossing, make-up application and a makeup color chart to take with her so she can recreate the look at home.

“We’ll also make sure the winner knows how to recreate her new hair style so that she can continue enjoying what we create for her,” said Lather’s owner and senior stylist Jessica Williams. “We don’t want this to be a one-day change. We want this to be life changing. We want our deserving winner to continue to feel great about her new look long after she’s left our salon.”

The winner will also receive a free photographic portrait of her new look by professional portrait photographer Max Cohen of Cohen Studios in downtown Raleigh.

Who does Williams expect to participate?

“Anyone and everyone,” she said, “from the ‘Scene’ kid who’s gone one black-hair-dye and chopped-up hair cut too far, to the empty-nester who’s ready to stop looking like a soccer mom and start looking like a ‘hot mama.’ We hope to hear from a courageous cancer survivor whose hair has finally grown back and it’s time for some serious styling, and a school teacher who’s so dedicated to her work that her hair is a limp mess and she’s almost forgotten how to apply make up.”

Along with contestants’ personal essays, Williams and her team of stylists, who will determine the winner, are hoping friends and family will also nominate their loved ones.

“Wife, mother, sister, daughter, favorite aunt, BFF,” she said, “we know there are some lovely ladies out there who won’t do this for themselves because they’re too focused on doing for others. So it’s up to their loved ones to make it happen for them.”

The “Help Me, Lather! I Need A Makeover!” contest runs now through February. The winner will be selected on March 1 and notified immediately so an appointment can be made for the total makeover.

“We’re also hoping our winner’s friends and family will come out to the salon that day to witness her transformation,” Williams added. “We want to entire event to be a lot of fun for her.”

There is no entry fee to participate. Contestants may send their 250-word, double-spaced, typed essay with a recent photo by email to Jessica@latherhairsalonnc.com (put Essay Contest Entry in the subject line) or by regular mail to: Lather Hair Salon Essay Contest, 8521 Cantilever Way, Suite 109, Raleigh, NC 27613.
