Virillion Music To Release “The Story To Be Told”

Marc Hoffman’s label announces new recording of original songs by local songwriter Carol Greene.

February 9, 2011 (CHARLOTTE, NC) – Three years ago, songwriter Carol Greene asked Marc Hoffman of Virillion Music to help her with the arrangements on some her songs. On March 1, 2011, Virillion Music will release the CD that evolved from that collaboration, The Story To Be Told.

The Story To Be Told is “an honest look at Carol Greene’s spiritual journey through life thus far,” said Hoffman, who composes, records and publishes his work and the work of other artists through his label, Virillion Music. “She has a lot to say through her music and lyrics.“

Hoffman recalls being immediately impressed by Green’s songwriting skills when she first approached him three years ago. “When she mentioned having her songs fully produced into a CD, I jumped at the chance.”

That enthusiasm would lead to Hoffman serving as the CD’s producer, arranger, engineer, keyboardist and vocalist.

“Carol isn’t a singer, so I stepped in there,” he said, “and I brought in Jenny Carroll, a terrific soprano I work with on occasion.”

Hoffman said he “wore a lot of hats” in the recording and production of The Story To Be Told, and even had a hand in the CD package design. His favorite song on the CD is the title track, “The Story To Be Told.”

“It reminds me of the epic Christian songs of the early 20th century. ‘The Holy City’ comes to mind,” he said, referring to the hymn by Stephen Adams with lyrics by Frederick Weatherly.

Known for his original jazz compilations, including the CD Curioso he released last year, Hoffman believes Greene is influenced by the Great American Songbook, or jazz standards, even though she claims not be interested in jazz. “Many of her songs include chords that are way beyond simple pop.”

The Story To Be Told will be available at CDBaby and iTunes after March 1, 2011

Sleep, Little Child, with accompanying CD, is the first in a series of children’s books planned by Salisbury, NC, native Marc Hoffman, with illustrations by Tony Waters of Charleston, SC. Marc Hoffman, Curioso Featured on WFSS-FM’s “Cool Ambiance” Show

October 28, 2010 (FAYETTEVILLE, NC) – Jazz composer Marc Hoffman and his new, all-original CD Curioso have captured the attention DJ Dionne Maldonado, the radio host for the show “Cool Ambiance,” on NPR station WFSS (91.9 FM) at Fayetteville State University. Maldonado, also known as “The Jazz Lady,” is spinning tracks from the CD during her show, which airs Saturdays from 7 p.m. until 12 a.m.

“I loved this CD,” Maldonado said. “Every track! I’m overjoyed to include Curioso and to front sell Marc as one of North Carolina’s artists to look out for in 2011. He’s right up there with Tom Grant.”

To support the airtime, Hoffman recorded liners – a phrase or sentence that introduces a CD or individual song – and public service announcements that Maldonado is using during the station’s fall membership drive.

“I worked in radio as a teenager,” Hoffman said, “so it was really fun to do this sort of thing again.”

Blue Bicycle Books To Host Special Signing, Live Performance For Kids

L-R: Illustrator Tony Waters and author/musician Marc Hoffman with "Sleep, Little Child."

Charleston Artist and Charlotte Author To Sign New Children’s Book

October 6, 2010 (CHARLESTON, SC) –  Blue Bicycle Books on King Street in Charleston will host a special book signing on Saturday, October 23, at 11 a.m. featuring North Carolina author/musician Marc Hoffman and illustrator Tony Waters of Charleston as they present their new children’s book and CD, Sleep, Little Child.

Along with a reading of the book and signing copies afterwards, Hoffman will perform the original lullaby on which the book is based. Refreshments will be included. The event is free and parents are encouraged to bring their children. The first 20 children in attendance will receive a coloring page and Crayola give-away.

Sleep, Little Child is a rhyming story in which a father assures his young son that he will sleep safely through the night because his heavenly Father is always watching over him.

The book is intended for children from infancy through age seven and includes a CD that features Hoffman singing the title lullaby. Other tracks offer the instrumental-only version and a read-along track, plus two non-musical readings: one by the author and another by the author’s mother, radio personality Barbara Hoffman.

The religious aspect of the book “wasn’t a conscious thing,” Hoffman said. “It came about naturally while I was writing the lyrics as a result of what I believe is our innate need to feel guarded/watched, especially when we sleep. Children are clever enough to know that ‘mommy and daddy’ certainly aren’t watching them all night.”

Waters’ watercolor illustrations depict a young family putting their small son to bed at night. The details came from pictures of Hoffman’s family and other “childhood things,” Waters said. “I also used some of the rooms and furnishings in my own house as a setting for the story. When I’m writing or illustrating a book, I’m inspired by the toys, books, artists, and emotions that gave me joy as a child and the desire to share that joy with other children.”

Born and raised in Charleston, Tony Waters has written and illustrated three children’s books of his own, illustrated four Flick books for Columbia, SC, author Lynn Floyd Wright, and contributed numerous illustrations for the Cricket Magazine Group over the past 16 years.

Prior to the bookstore event, he will appear on ABC News 4’s “Lowcountry Live!” show (WCIV-TV) on October 21, at 10 a.m. to discuss Sleep, Little Child.

Author Marc Hoffman is best known as a composer, performer and recording artist who recently released an all-original jazz compilation CD entitled “Curioso.” He credits his wife, Anne, and their young daughter, August, with the inspiration to turn his lullaby into a book.

“As soon as August was born, we began reading books and singing lullabies to her,” he said. “It didn’t take me long to remember that I had a lullaby of mine own. And after hearing the song many times, it dawned on Anne that it was a natural fit as a children’s book.”

Marc Hoffman To Headline 2010 Blues & Jazz Event

Original jazz and blues comes to the City Club of Rock Hill.

September 22, 2010 (ROCK HILL, SC) – To promote his new CD Curioso, jazz composer/musician Marc Hoffman will perform a number of all-original tunes from the CD at the City Club of Rock Hill on Saturday, October 1, from 7 to 11 p.m. as part of Rock Hill’s 6th Annual Old Town Blues & Jazz Festival.

The City Club of Rock Hill is located at 140 Main Street in downtown Rock Hill, SC.

For this performance, Hoffman will be joined by Chris Garges on drums, Dave Vergato on bass, Chris Jones on guitar and Carrie Marshall on vocals.

Curioso features several tracks that were inspired by other jazz musician’s work. “Hefti” channels the light, lyrical work of Hoffman’s former composition professor, the late Neal Hefti. “Pontified” is Hoffman’s take on the late ‘70s music of Jean-Luc Ponty. “Introspective” is reminiscent of David Benoit’s smooth jazz. And Vince Guaraldi’s influence is apparent on the title tune, “Curioso.”

Virillion Music released the CD this summer. Tracks can be heard on Marc Hoffman’s website, www.marchoffman.com, and at CDBaby, Amazon, and iTunes.

Hoffman’s upcoming gig follows recent performances at the Matthews Alive Festival in Matthews, NC, and for the “Tickling The Ivories” all-piano music concert at the Ashe County Performing Arts Center in Jefferson, NC.

Now in its sixth year, the Old Town Blues & Jazz Festival draws thousands of people from York County and throughout the southeast, showcasing some of the best blues and jazz entertainment in the region.
