Network, Nosh, and Sample Locally Crafted Spirits in Downtown Durham Distillery

On Wednesday, November 15, from 5 – 7 p.m., pod architecture + design (pod a+d) partners Doug Pierson, AIA, and Youn Choi, along with owner/master distiller Tina Williford, will co-host a “Thirst4Architecture” social event in Williford’s Liberty & Plenty Distillery & Cocktail Bar at 609 B Foster Street in downtown Durham.

Thirst4Architecture (T4A) “happy hours” are sponsored by NCModernist, the non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting modernist architecture. Hosted by architecture firms and other businesses in the industry, these networking events are free and open to all modernist design enthusiasts in the Triangle, from homeowners, artists and architects to contractors, realtors, interior designers, et al.

Large, roll-up doors invite breezes inside from the Liberty & Plenty porch.

Williford founded Liberty & Plenty in March 2020 as a 100 percent woman-owned craft distillery. During the November 15th event, guests will be able to sample a selection of her unique, small-batch spirits, including vodkas, gins, rums, and whiskies. She will also provide h’ordeuvres and non-alcoholic beverages.

Along with introducing the distillery to T4A participants, the event will spotlight the architectural transformation of a 3400-square-foot, industrial brick warehouse built in 1930 into a fully operational craft spirits distillery fronted by a modern, casually chic Cocktail Bar. To create this conversion, Williford collaborated with pod architecture + design, the Chapel Hill-based firm with award-winning expertise in modern craft distillery and brewery design and one of Blueplate PR‘s exclusive clients.

Doug Pierson, Youn Choi, and Tina Williford will be on hand, happy to discuss the process of bringing Liberty & Plenty to life in downtown Durham.

For the first time since moving back to North Carolina from the West Coast, Youn Choi and Doug Pierson, founders and principals of pod architecture + design (pod a+d) in Carrboro, will host Thirst4Architecture (T4A) to celebrate modern architecture and the people in the Triangle who love it on Thursday, August 16, from 6-8 p.m.

Free and open to the public, the event is one of the monthly happy hour networking social occasions established by North Carolina Modernist Houses and will be held in the firm’s studio in the historic train depot in the heart of downtown Carrboro.

T4A is an opportunity for anyone interested in and associated with modern architecture to mix, mingle, and build relationships with other modern design enthusiasts in a relaxed, casual environment. Pierson and Choi will provide the location, food, and beverages while participants get an up-close look at pod a+d’s work through models and drawings.

A Special Treat for T4A Guests

Award-winning architect Doug Pierson, AIA, recently attended the grand opening of one of his firm’s most ambitious projects to date: Rabbit Hole Distillery, a state-of-the-art, 55,000-square-foot, $15 million bourbon distillery and campus in downtown Louisville, Kentucky.

For their T4A event, Pierson and Choi are having Rabbit Hole’s award-winning bourbon shipped to Carrboro. The bar staff provided by Drew Moore, owner of CrossTies Barbeque (201-East Main Street) and several other local establishments, will serve special bourbon-based cocktails as well as “straight” and “on the rocks” options, and soft drinks for pod a+d’s August 16 event.

Moore is also providing CrossTie’s popular “Brisket Slides” for the evening’s savory selection.

 “As local as possible”

Pierson and Choi, partners in life as well as work, are relative newcomers to the Triangle architecture and design community, having recently returned from living and working on the West Coast. Their new modern house in Carrboro, which they designed together for their family of four, is under construction and will plant their roots here even deeper.

“We’re so happy to be back,” Pierson said, “that we’re doing everything we can to be as ‘local’ as possible. That’s why we chose space in the old depot for our offices. We’re active in the community, we shop at the Farmers Market and Weaver Street, and we’re working with one of the best high-performance, or ‘green,’ homebuilders for our new house: Kevin Murphy of Newphire Building in Chapel Hill. We’re also hiring all-local subcontractors and vendors, including the lumber supplier.” He smiled. “And we’re always free to talk when people walk in and tell us that our space doesn’t look like a barbeque joint.” He explained that people often mistake the firm’s front door for the entrance to Cross Ties.

Oysters & Architecture: Eidolon Designs Hosts February’s “Thirst4Architecture”

Eidolon Designs in Raleigh will once again host “Thirst4Architecture,” a networking event sponsored by North Carolina Modernist Houses (NCMH) and Emilie Huin of Triangle Modern Homes on Thursday, February 18, from 6-8 p.m. Free and open to the public, this month’s T4A event also includes Eidolon’s annual Oyster Roast.

T4A events are opportunities for architects, artists, building managers, contractors, engineers, furniture dealers, realtors, and anyone else interested in Modernist residential design to connect and create strategic alliances in a casual environment. The hosts provide refreshments and other entertainment while introducing T4A participants to their businesses.

Located at 414 Dupont Circle in Raleigh’s historic Boylan Heights neighborhood, Eidolon Designs handcrafts fine furniture, architectural millwork, doors, kitchen, bath, and office components, media integration pieces, and sculpture.

According to owners Ann Cowperthwaite and Mike Parker, who have supported NCMH events for many years, Eidolon team members “are artists and craftsmen, not manufacturers” and the company is “committed to environmental sustainability,” sourcing hardwoods from certified tree farms, sheet woods that are formaldehyde-free, and using only non-toxic finishes.

Architect Jason Hart of CUBE design+ research will host August’s Thirst4Architecture (T4A) happy hour with North Carolina Modernist Houses on Thursday, August 20, from 6-8 p.m.

Free and open to the public, the event will be held in the open-air courtyard at Straw Valley, 5420 Durham-Chapel Hill Boulevard, Durham. Emilie Huin, broker/owner of Triangle Modern Homes Real Estate LLC, a specialist in Modernist real estate throughout the Triangle, is the T4A series sponsor for 2015.

October 18, 2011 (Durham, NC) – Fullsteam Brewery and Tavern in Durham will host Triangle Modernist Houses (TMH) “Thirst4Architecture” (T4A) Happy Hour on Thursday, October 27, from 6-8 p.m. The cash-bar event, sponsored by Ellen Cassilly Architecture and Urban Durham Realty, is free and open to the public.

Triangle Modernist Houses is an award-winning non-profit organization dedicated to documenting, preserving and promoting Modernist residential design. The “Thirst4Architecture” happy hours connect people with a passion for Modernist architecture in an informal setting.

“We welcome architects, artists, designers, interior designers, realtors, engineers, contractors, property investors, building managers, Modernist homeowners, materials and furniture dealers – or anyone with a huge crush on great architecture,” says TMH founder and board chairman George Smart. “T4A events focus on building relationships, generating passion about good design, creating strategic alliances, and connecting people that we know and trust to each other.
